The Winter Blues Blog Hop, Day 2

Wasn't the eye candy yesterday fantastic!!!  I just love hops where everyone has fun creating something beautiful using needle and thread.  Please check out the other quilters showing off their creations today.

Today is my day to share in

For my Winter Blues quilt I am showing the quilt top I made with Alicia of Alicia Quilts and her Winter QAL.  I love the color teal and have quite the lovely curated collection of teals!!  Alicia makes most of her quilts for Quilts of Valor, so the colors she chose for her quilt are red, white and blue.  I went with teal, white and orange.  I don't like the color orange very much, but it really sparkles with teal, so I am trying to embrace the orange!!  It's funny, but the last 3 project I have worked on have included the color orange!!  My Winter QAL, the Mystery QAL (here) and my Project Quilting with Kim of Persimmon Dreams.  Thank you, Carla, of Creatin' in the Sticks for coordinating this fun blog hop!!

I am calling my quilt Sparkle!  It all started with the fabric pull and show, which my dear Tara totally ignored!
And they became this:

Thank you, Alicia for the wonderful pattern and the encouragement to get sewing again!!  Thank you, Carla, for giving me a place to show it off!!  I will quilt it when I get home to my longarm!!  A big thank you to Amy and Katherine, my dad's hospice CNA and RN who were kind enough to hold my quilt so I could get a decent picture of it in the sunshine!

Surprise, surprise!!  I got another blue project finished!!  I just couldn't stop working on this and got it finished yesterday.  Originally it was going to go in my kitchen at the farm, but it may end up in the guest bathroom or in my quilting room.  I had never tried this before, but one Youtube video later, here it is:

A double jelly roll rug!!  I'll post a mini tutorial on Saturday because there are definitely some tricks and tips to making this.  I am beyond thrilled with the way it turned out.  I believe the double jelly roll I used was made by the quilt shop owner, so it is not just one line of fabric.

Here are the bloggers who are participating in The Winter Blues with me:

Tuesday, January 21st - TODAY

Wednesday, January 22nd

If you read down this far, thank you for stopping by.  I'm going to have a little giveaway of a pair of my favorite snips.  Thank you, Kevin the Quilter for introducing me to them.  They are by Golden Eagle.  To enter the giveaway, just leave a comment and I'll have my dad draw a winner on Saturday, January 25.

Your colors for the quilt are lovely together, and give it a great lightness. I especially like the greener ones that peek out here and there. Thanks for the chance to win the snips, too. Your dad will be a great picker!

Thank you for showing us this beautiful quilt. The blue and the orange was a great combo.

Really pretty quilt and rug. I love the orange with the blue. Thanks for the giveaway chance.

Your quilt is so pretty, and the rug is gorgeous! I made a small hot pad with the same technique (I assume) as the rug, and you're inspiring me to try something bigger!

I love your quilt and JR rug. I have wanted to try one of these and yours is gorgeous. Thanks for sharing

I don't use much orange either but after looking at your beautiful quilt I will need to rethink that. You are right about how well it works with the teal. I have all the parts to make one of those jelly roll throw rugs. Yours might have been the incentive to get it done.

Your sparkle quilt top and rug are beautiful. Great job!! I'd love to own those snips, they look like something that would be great to have in my carry along bag, for traveling, but I'd probably use them everyday!!

I love your mystery quilt, the colors are so vibrant. I'm always concerned when I see a jelly roll rug. I'm always afraid it would slip. How heavy is it? My grandmother used to make crocheted rugs out of old clothing and those rugs were always bunched up, never stayed flat. I hated those rugs. Thanks for the shares!

Turquoise and orange on white is my favorite color combo. Your winter quilt looks so bright and cheerful - like a sunny winter day (in Texas :-)

Orange isn't my most favorite color...but when you put it the blue quilt...WOW does that sparkle! It's the punch of color that put it off the charts! Your rug is absolutely beautiful too.

Hi Susan!! How on earth did I not know you had a blog?? I know you don't know, but seriously. I apologize for not visiting before this. Talk about being remiss in a BIG way. HA - I'm glad you are embracing orange - it is a close cousin to red, after all. Oh yes, I can see that Tara couldn't care less which fabrics you pulled. Now, should there be a little food treat involved . . . well, I'll bet she would be all over your choices! What a gorgeous jelly roll rug. It turned out great and it will look fab wherever you decide to use it. {{Hugs}} a bunch for you and your whole family - hospice caregivers are truly the best. I don't know how they can chose that job but I am ever so thankful that there are people who do, and do it so well. ~smile~ Roseanne

I love the colours of your quilt and you are so right the orange does make the other colours pop. I love the blue of the rug, I have seen them a lot in Blog land but again have never dared to use material to make them!!! It goes along with me with applique!!!! I will catch up with the Hop tomorrow, today has been busy again with work. Another great hop and thanks for sharing. Hugs, Susie xx

Great projects! I recently made my first rug, too. Hope things go well with your family. I'm dealing with similar, and Mom's caregivers for Alzheimer's are great.

Susan your Sparkle quilt is wonderful! I love teal also, but would not have thought of adding orange, which is not one of my favorite colors, but I LOVE it!! And I love your rug and look forward to the tutorial! I was a hospice nurse for a while during my nursing career. It was one of the most rewarding jobs I had. I hope your dad is doing as well as can be expected.

I just finished my first 'jelly roll rug', too!! Yours is outstanding in the blues. I wondered if double means that it uses two jelly rolls or around 80 strips. The one I made I thought could be larger so there will definitely be another rug. The teal and orange does sparkle; maybe orange will turn into a new favorite color.

When I read your colors used, I thought "ehhhh". But after seeing them, I love them. They have a soothing tone to them. I have tried those snips before, and really liked them. The store was out of them when I went to buy, so I ended up buying something else. Totally forgot about them til now.
